The Designers Institute of New Zealand has recently revealed the entries for its prestigious annual Best Design Awards, showcasing the very best in local creative talent.  Judged by respected industry professionals, the event features a wide variety of categories across a number of disciplines.

Amongst 2020’s selection of finalists, our new Taniko Seat has been chosen amongst 11 other designs from across the country, to compete in the furniture category.

Designed by Auckland based Clark Bardsley in partnership with Tilley Group, the Taniko Seat is based on a sofa-style concept, and features a continuous back and armrest, solid pedestal footing and textile influenced patterning.  The perforations in the back and armrest of the seat reference the eponymous Tāniko weaving pattern Rau Kumara. This patterning, and subsequent transparency, embeds the furniture in its environment, complementing and blending with the surrounding landscaping. It also helps make the seat feel ‘of its place’.
